The season of the watermelon

The season of the watermelon

Watermelons are grown around the world these days

The watermelon, which originated in South Africa and was already cultivated in ancient Egypt, has now established itself as a high-yielding crop in almost all countries around the world. The main growing areas for watermelons are primarily in the following countries:

  • United States
  • Turkey
  • China
  • Brazil
  • Iran
  • Spain

Due to the high transport weight, watermelons from other continents are usually only sold in this country in the winter months, as they cause high transport costs.

Enjoy watermelons from Europe in spring and summer

In the months from May to September watermelons can be enjoyed particularly fresh and inexpensive, as they are then ripe in the European growing regions. In this country, the fruits offered seasonally come mainly from Hungary, Spain and Turkey. In addition to being eaten fresh, they are also suitable for preparing ham snacks or mixing refreshing smoothies.

Tips & Tricks

When growing watermelons in your own garden, it is necessary to grow the plants on the windowsill or plant them in the greenhouse so that the fruits can really ripen in this northern location until autumn.
