Sunny and protected: find a place for your magnolia to feel good

Optimal location depends on the variety

In terms of location, the magnolia is a real diva, which you can only please with great effort. The tree is unlikely to thrive in the wrong place, and even if you care for it intensively, it is unlikely to flower. Therefore, before buying this beautiful flowering plant, you should take a close look at your garden. Magnolia is not just magnolia, there are over 100 different varieties specially grown for the home garden, all of which have more or less different demands on their location. When choosing a location, also note that magnolias usually grow not only in height but also in width and therefore require space. For small gardens, therefore, small-growing varieties are recommended. But whichever variety you choose, all magnolias have the following requirements:

  • a sunny to partially shaded location (depending on the variety)
  • at least four hours of sun a day
  • a sheltered place
  • enough space in width - magnolias are mostly solitary

Be careful with magnolias that bloom very early

Magnolias love the sun, but you shouldn't choose a location in full sun, especially for the very early flowering varieties, because the sunnier the location, the earlier the tree will bloom. However, since the flowers are very sensitive to frost, an early bloom can be destroyed in sudden frosty nights.

Pay attention to the correct soil conditions

The optimal location naturally also includes the optimal soil. Most varieties (with a few exceptions) prefer a slightly acidic, always moist soil, which should be protected from drying out and warming by a layer of mulch or underplanting - the roots growing shallowly under the ground like neither drought nor heat.

Tips & Tricks

If you do not naturally have an appropriate garden soil, you can also improve the planting site with rhododendron or bog soil.
