Lawn edging stones only keep the roots of the lawn in check if they reach at least ten centimeters, better still 15 centimeters, deep into the ground after the work is completed.

You have to work out how many stones you need. To do this, draw the lawn mowing edge and measure it with the folding rule. Divide the result by the width of the stones. You need around ten percent more lawn edging stones for curves.

Straight or curved edges

If the edges are straight, use a piece of string so that the mowing edge is really straight. You have to create curves by hand. A cardboard template can be helpful here.

Set lawn mowing edge

With the spade you dig enough earth that you can lay a small foundation of sand if necessary, and the stones protrude a maximum of one to two centimeters above the surface of the ground.

This difference in height is not noticeable when mowing. You can later easily cut the lawn edging stones with the lawn mower. Use the spirit level to check whether the cutting edge is correctly aligned.

If you want to have peace in front of the lawn in beds or on paths for a long time, you should lay two rows of stones offset so that the grass roots cannot squeeze through the gaps.

Set stones as close as possible

Now place the stones as close to one another as possible and knock them down with the paving hammer.

Fill in soil on the sides and step on them well so that the lawn mower edge does not shift or the stones can tip over.

Tips & Tricks

A lawn mowing edge also helps with lawn care in front of a wall. If you create a slightly wider edge here, you can easily shorten the lawn with the lawn mower.
