Caring for parsley properly - a few tips on care!

How do you water parsley properly?

Watering is the biggest problem in properly caring for parsley. The plant doesn't like it dry or too humid. It does not tolerate waterlogging at all.

Always water when the surface of the soil has dried out. Make sure the plant never gets too dry.

Plant parsley in well-drained soil to prevent waterlogging. Use planters with large drainage holes when keeping them in pots on the balcony.

Does parsley have to be fertilized?

You need to be careful with fertilizing. You must never give fresh organic fertilizer such as compost or manure. Suitable fertilizers are:

  • Ripe compost
  • Horn shavings
  • Horn meal
  • Liquid plant fertilizer

In the open field, give a little fertilizer at most every four weeks. Pot parsley has to be fertilized more often as the nutrients in the pot are used up very quickly.

Can you transplant parsley?

If the plants are growing in an awkward location where they won't develop well, you can try transplanting them. However, this does not always work.

If you want to cultivate parsley from the open ground in a pot on the windowsill over winter, you can dig up a few plants and place them in a planter. With a little luck, the herbs will grow.

How do you cut parsley properly?

Caring for parsley involves cutting the herb continuously.

Only cut the outer stems if they have at least three pairs of leaves. You must not cut the heart as the plant will die.

Before flowering or before the onset of frost, cut a supply to freeze for the winter.

What pests occur in parsley?

Aphids are the most common. If possible, collect them by hand or cut off infected branches. You should avoid chemical agents.

Snails are a common problem in the wild. Sometimes it helps to put coarse sand around the beds to keep the snails off.

Which diseases can occur?

Powdery mildew and leaf spot disease are quite common. Yellow leaves are usually not a disease, but a symptom of a bad location.

Is parsley hardy or does it need winter protection?

The herb is hardy and does not need winter protection. You can only protect them with a cover in very cold locations.

Tips & Tricks

Make sure you plant new rows of parsley in a different location. Like all umbelliferous plants, the aromatic herb does not get along with itself. Parsley planted in the same place grows poorly and dies quickly, even if you tend to care for it properly.
