The soil must never dry out during the growing season and the flowering period. It doesn't even do any harm if there is some irrigation water in the coaster from time to time. Once a week you should spray the calla with a flower sprayer to increase the humidity.

During the resting phase and wintering, the calla is not watered at all, so that the substrate dries out completely.

How should the calla be fertilized?

In the growth phase before flowering, fertilize every two weeks with a little liquid flower fertilizer in the irrigation water. During the flowering period, the calla is fertilized weekly. No fertilizer should be given after flowering.

Basically, it is better to provide the plant with too little fertilizer than with too much fertilizer.

When does the calla have to be repotted?

As with every pot plant, repotting is necessary at the latest when the pot becomes too small. However, gardening experts advise to transplant the calla every spring and replace the entire soil in the process.

Calla does not get any contaminated, depleted soil. It will barely bloom and will have yellow leaves prematurely.

Calla that is planted in the garden can, however, be planted in the same place every May.

Is it necessary to cut the plant?

Cutting is hardly necessary. Are only cut

  • Blooming flowers
  • Cut flowers
  • Leaves turning yellow or brown prematurely
  • The yellow foliage before the plant is overwintered

You should never cut green leaves. They provide the plant with nutrients.

Does the Calla need a break?

After the flowering period, the calla needs a rest period of at least ten weeks. During this time it is neither watered nor fertilized. To properly care for the plant, place it in a bright and cool place during this time.

Calla that you have planted in the flowerbed should be digged out by autumn at the latest and let the flower bulbs dry out completely. Then the tubers come to the winter quarters.

Which diseases can occur?

Calla fungal and viral diseases are very troublesome. The signs of an infestation are leaves that turn brown or yellow prematurely. If action is not taken immediately, the roots will begin to rot.

Illnesses mainly occur if you do not properly care for the calla. Above all, contaminated, old soil or pots and too little moisture during the flowering phase or too wet during the resting phase cause diseases.

If necessary, you can try to remove the affected areas on the leaves and tubers. Usually it's too late for that. The plant should then be disposed of with household waste.

What pests do you need to watch out for?

Aphids and spider mites are very common in calla. Try washing off the leaves and picking up the pests from the bracts.

If the infestation is very severe, the only option is often to use commercially available pesticides. In any case, you should place the plant separately so that the pests cannot spread any further.

The best precaution is to properly care for the calla. A healthy Zantedeschia will then survive light pest infestation better.

What if the plant gets yellow leaves?

Yellow leaves after flowering are quite normal. A disease or a care mistake can only be responsible if the leaves change color beforehand.

Why is it if the calla doesn't bloom?

If the calla does not start to flower, it is almost always due to incorrect care or a bad location. Calla plants grown from seed take a few years to bloom.

Is Calla hardy?

Most calla varieties are not hardy. They must be overwintered frost-free.

How is the calla properly overwintered?

The room calla in the pot is placed in a cool but light place until January and is not poured or fertilized. From January onwards she will slowly get used to more warmth and humidity.

From calla onions, after spending, you need to remove the soil and let the tubers dry out well. They are then stored in a dark and very dry place until spring.
