Planting garden amaryllis correctly - a step-by-step guide

These site conditions are ideal

Choose a sunny, warm location for your garden amaryllis that is in light shade at lunchtime. A place in front of the heat-storing house wall or the protective backdrop of trees is ideal for tropical grace. A fresh, moist, well-drained and nutrient-rich soil offers the onion the perfect home until you leave the bulbs that are not hardy in autumn.

Spring time is planting time

In contrast to the winter-flowering amaryllis as a houseplant in a pot, the garden amaryllis enchants us with a lavish summer flowering. Accordingly, the window for the planting time opens in spring. If the ground has thawed deeply in March / April, the flower bulbs can go into the ground. The plant should have taken its place in the garden by mid / late May at the latest.

This is how you correctly place the flower bulbs

Loosen the soil carefully and work in ripe compost on the surface. After preparing the ground, continue with these steps:

  • Dig small planting pits at a distance of 25-30 cm
  • Spread a layer of sand on the sole as drainage
  • Place the amaryllis bulb in the middle with the tip pointing upwards

Only fill the planting hole with substrate so far that the onion neck protrudes from the ground. The earth is pressed with the hands for a good ground contact. In the last step, water a little without the tuber being exposed again by the water jet.

Tips

Knight stars and amaryllis are often generalized in the trade as the same plant species. In view of the similar appearance, this is not surprising. In fact, knight stars come from the dry regions of South America and therefore make different demands on care than amaryllis from the humid and warm regions of South Africa.
