The straw flower in the garden - hardy or not?

Bring perennial and hardy varieties better through the winter

Some subspecies of the everlasting flower are explicitly offered in specialist shops as frost-resistant and hardy. These are often species that also occur naturally in Europe or hybrids that descend from natural European species. With targeted care you can help these plants to sprout again vigorously in the same location in the garden in the following spring. To do this, cut the plants back to the ground in autumn and cover their root area with some sticks and leaves. In this way, the plant roots are not only better protected from the winter cold, but also from excess moisture.

Bring annual everlasting flowers into the house

Some hobby gardeners also want to increase the lifespan of their everlasting flowers from the area of very frost-sensitive species. In particular, the compact everlasting flowers that grow in pots can be brought onto the windowsill in autumn. But there are also other ways to bring the blooming splendor of the everlasting flowers into your home for a longer period of time. After all, everlasting flowers retain their original flower colors relatively well even when they dry. Note, however, that you should cut off the flowers of the immortelle intended for dry bouquets if they have not yet fully blossomed.

Simply grow everlasting flowers from seeds yourself

Even with the annual species of strawflower, the end of the gardening season doesn't have to mean saying goodbye forever. If the plants do not spread through self-sowing in your garden anyway, you can also help a little yourself. You can either prefer everlasting flowers in sowing soil on the windowsill from March or sow the seeds directly in the open from the ice saints. In general, the following factors apply to the sowing of everlasting flowers:

  • they are dark germs (the seeds should only be covered thinly with earth)
  • do not sow too closely
  • Never let the substrate dry out completely during the germination phase
  • germination takes about 2 weeks

Tips

So that the hardy varieties of strawflower survive the winter, something should be poured in the case of cold frosts and winter protection from mulch, leaves and twigs should be provided.
