Choose a small variety for magnolia on the balcony

Small pot magnolias also need a lot of space

The small-sized magnolia varieties of the star magnolia (Magnolia stellata) and purple magnolia (Magnolia liliiflora) species are best suited for cultivation in pots. But even these naturally reach heights of up to three meters and grow bushy in width. For this reason, you have to plan a lot of space for the small magnolias in terms of both the pot size and the size of the balcony - these large shrubs will most likely not feel particularly comfortable on a narrow, small balcony.

Older pot magnolias sometimes become sickly

The growth of the roots could also become a problem: With age, these become thick, fleshy and branch out very strongly. In addition, the flat and broadly growing magnolia roots do not like to be squeezed in under highly compressed soil conditions, mainly because they prefer cooler temperatures (in contrast to the plant growing above the ground). They also do not get waterlogged, which is why the pots must always have good drainage.

Proper care of the pot magnolia

Pot magnolias do not like waterlogging, but they must not dry out either. Ensure a regular and even supply of water in nutrients in the form of liquid fertilizers. In addition to the space required, the right location on the balcony is also important. The magnolia should be in the sun for at least four hours a day, which is why an orientation in a south, south-west or south-east orientation is desirable. It doesn't matter whether your magnolia is enjoying the morning or evening sun.

Tips & Tricks

In winter, potted magnolias are significantly more endangered than specimens planted in the garden. If your magnolia is to overwinter on the balcony, you must above all protect the sensitive roots from frost. To do this, wrap the pot with fleece and cover the earth with a thick layer of bark mulch. You can also put a jute sack (€ 8.28 on Amazon *) over the crown. However, it is best for the magnolia to overwinter under cold house conditions.
