The ideal location for the goji berry

Only young plants are protected over winter

Young Goji berry plants propagated from seeds or cuttings may not be as hardy as older specimens of this plant species in the first year. They are therefore either overwintered in a bright and unheated winter quarters or in the open air with a layer of mulch (99.99 € on Amazon *) or leaves are protected from the winter cold.

Harvest a rich harvest at the right location

The ideal location for the goji berry in the garden offers the following location factors:

  • lots of light
  • a lot of warmth
  • a well-drained, well-ventilated soil
  • no waterlogging
  • a humus-rich substrate (possibly enriched with deposited compost as long-term fertilization)

Under these conditions, the goji berry basically needs little care and usually sets numerous flowers and fruits from the second or third year of standing.

Make sure there is sufficient space when planting

Since goji berries grow quickly and vigorously, around one square meter of space in the berry garden should be allowed for per plant. When planting, there should be a distance of around two meters between two bushes. In order to get a grip on the relatively far overhanging branches of the plants, they can also be tied to a trellis like blackberry tendrils.

Tips

Like sea buckthorn, the goji berry is known to thrive even on slightly salty soils near the coast.
