DIY herb garden in the Euro pallet

Build a vertical herb garden in the Euro pallet

To convert the palette into a herb garden, you don't even have to be particularly skilled. Basically, all you have to do is cut the floors to size and screw them on and line the resulting flower boxes (€ 13.19 on Amazon *) with pond liner or similar. The herb garden you have built yourself is ready!

You need that

You will need:

  • a euro pallet
  • narrow wooden slats for the bottom of the "flower boxes"
  • Mulch or pond liner
  • possibly decorative materials such as blackboard foil, ropes, masking tape ...

as well as corresponding tools:

  • Drill (€ 79.87 at Amazon *) or larger nails and a hammer
  • a large stapler with plenty of staples
  • a saw
  • and sandpaper.

This is how we build

If you have all the materials, you can now start building. First of all, turn the pallet around and measure how long and wide the bottom of the three future “flower boxes” must be. Then cut three matching shelves from the narrow wooden slat and fasten them well. Once that's done, you basically only have to line the “flower boxes” with foil and staple them - that's it. The rest is just fine work that you can do as you please or not. The herb palette can be nicely decorated with sheet foil and ropes, sanded smooth and lacquered / painted in color or whatever else you can think of to embellish.

Plant the pallet correctly

In the resulting flower boxes you fill a suitable herbal substrate, the composition of which depends entirely on the desired species. Mediterranean herbs get a lean, sandy substrate, other culinary herbs, on the other hand, have a more substantial mixture than flower and herb soil and a little sand. Do not forget to first place a few centimeters smaller pebbles or similar under the substrate as drainage - after all, waterlogging is fatal for most herbs. Around 12 different herbs fit into a standard Euro pallet with three “flower boxes”. The exact number of course depends primarily on how big the selected species usually get or how often you want to harvest them. Leave enough air and light for the plants to grow healthily.

Which herbs are suitable for planting the palette?

Basically all leaf and flowering herbs are suitable for cultivation in the herb range. Only root herbs such as horseradish do not thrive under these conditions, after all, the space available is quite limited. When planting the boxes, make sure that you always put together herbs with similar needs in terms of moisture and nutrients - combinations such as parsley and rosemary shouldn't go too well. For example, plant the top row (where there is a lot of sun) with Mediterranean herbs, the lower row with specialties such as coriander, basil, mint or various wild herbs and the bottom row with common kitchen herbs such as parsley, chives and chervil.

Tips

Always fix the herb palette well, for example on a wall or with the help of support stakes. If it is used as a privacy screen in the garden, you can also set it in concrete. This securing is necessary so that the whole construction does not fall over with the next breeze.
