Prick kohlrabi for more room to grow

Why prick?

Kohlrabi is sown thinly in rows in the garden bed or in growing containers for the windowsill. If all the seeds sprout, the bed or container will become tight. The plants hinder each other in their growth and therefore have to be separated.

The right time

Cotyledons + 2: according to this rule, you should prick out your young kohlrabi plants. About a week after germination, two leaves have formed in addition to the small cotyledons. Then it's time to prick.

That's how it works

  • Carefully remove the plants one by one from the soil
  • use a prick stick or hold the plant between your thumb and forefinger
  • Shorten the roots very easily
  • Use your finger or the prick stick to drill a hole in the earth and follow the plant with the roots

    reinsert at the bottom

  • the leaves must not rest on the ground
  • Press the soil on, water it lightly, done

Where to put the young plants

Pricked plants are put back in a new place. You should keep a distance of at least 15 cm in the garden bed. You now place kohlrabi plants that you prefer on the windowsill individually in prepared, small pots or yoghurt pots. Here they can continue to grow in nutrient-rich substrate until they find their place in the field.

Most of the time, more kohlrabi plants will develop than you can need. Then you sort out the weaker ones and the strong plants are preserved.

Tips & Tricks

Put pricked plants back in the ground immediately! If they stay in the sun, they quickly dry out and wither.
