Propagate birch - three ways to get your own birch

Birch propagation made easy

As a pioneer plant, birch colonizes fallow areas particularly quickly. That is why you will usually find numerous small specimens next to a fully grown birch: Simply dig out a small plant and take it with you into your garden. If necessary, it is advisable to ask the owner beforehand. The birch is a shallow root, so you can dig it up to a height of 1-2 meters, preferably in April. The young tree should be in the so-called mouse-eared stage of early shoot formation. It is best to carefully cut out balls with a spatula to protect the roots. Plant and water the birch in your own garden.

Pulling birch from seeds

Sowing is also a very promising route to your own birch. All you need is a birch tree with ripe fruit and a pot of soil:

  1. At the end of March to mid-April, the seeds can be easily removed from the brownish fruit cluster. Simply crumble it in the palm of your hand and then hold it over the pot of earth. So the seeds distribute themselves almost by themselves.
  2. Turn the earth over once with your hands.
  3. When the young birch that grows from it is strong enough, you can plant it in a planting hole in the garden.

Propagation from branch

Since the birch, as a pioneer plant, is designed entirely for the distribution of seeds, you have to offer a cutting optimal conditions in order to encourage it to root. This works as follows:

  1. Cut off a sturdy shoot tip cuttings of at least 10 to 20 centimeters in length from the desired birch species. It should be solidly lignified at the bottom with several eyes and green at the top.
  2. Strip the leaves from the lower part.
  3. Remove larger leaves at the top with the scissors.
  4. Snap off the flower roots, they waste energy unnecessarily
  5. Carefully and as straight as possible, place the cutting in a small pot with soil
  6. Position in partial shade - direct sun would burn it
  7. Keep moist - not wet
  8. Wait for the roots to develop, the first roots will grow out of the potty and you can plant the young birch.
