Small variety of fruits

Kiwi is a berry fruit of the Chinese ray pen (Actinidia chinensis). The fruits are about 6-8 cm tall, have an evenly oval shape and greenish-brown colored, hairy, quite thin skin. Most of the kiwis come to us from New Zealand. The Zespri brand is most commonly found on supermarket fruit shelves.

Two types of fruit are available in stores all year round, which are very similar in size, color and taste: Actinidia deliciosa (kiwifruit with green flesh) and Actinidia chinensis (kiwifruit with golden yellow flesh). If you like it sour and tangy, you can choose the green kiwi. For those who prefer it sweeter, the gold kiwifruit is a better choice.

Variety of varieties in plants

Kiwi plants are dioecious climbing plants with large, hairy leaves and white-yellow flowers. The kiwi bush is hardy and likes to wrap its long shoots around wires, sticks and other climbing aids. In warm, sheltered locations, it can grow to heights of 10-20 meters. Robust varieties of the climbing exotic can also be successfully cultivated under Central European conditions.

Large fruity varieties

In the wine-growing regions and areas with mild winters, good yields can be achieved with the standard Heyward variety. Other more or less frost-resistant varieties are also available in specialist shops, a distinction being made between male and female types:

  • Starella (female),
  • Allison (female),
  • Solissimo renact (new breed, self-fertile),
  • Solo (self-fertile),
  • Nostino (male).

Mini kiwi fruit

The frost-resistant mini kiwis (Actinidia arguta or Actinidia kolomikta) are ideally suited for regions with a harsh climate. These have about 2-4 cm large fruits with a smooth skin, which is eaten with them. In terms of taste, the mini kiwifruit are not inferior to the big ones. In addition, the fruits and leaves, colored in red or purple, are a colorful sight in the garden.

  • Weiki or Bayern-Kiwi (male or female),
  • Ken's Red (female),
  • Milano (male).

Tips & Tricks

If you don't have enough space for several kiwi plants, you can still harvest kiwis in your own garden thanks to the self-fertile Jenny or Issai varieties.
