Physalis are not hardy

Hibernate Andean berries

In this country, the Andean berry is usually grown as an annual plant because - similar to the tomato - it germinates, grows, blooms and bears fruit within one vegetation period. The plant, which originally came from South America, is actually perennial, but does not survive the German winter with its sometimes severe frosts. You can easily overwinter your Andean berries in the house or in the conservatory, which is best done in a pot. Physalis, however, also thrives excellently in a bucket and can therefore be cultivated in one - this makes it easier to hibernate later.

How to overwinter the Andean berry

  • Physalis should be brought into the house before the first frost.
  • Place the potted plants in a room that is not too dark and at most 10 to 15 ° C.
  • Physalis is evergreen, so the room should be as bright as possible.
  • Physalis that are planted in the garden are best digged out and put in a pot.
  • Water the plant regularly, fertilizing is not necessary in winter.
  • Prune the Andean berries heavily in spring.
  • It will sprout again from the roots.

Hibernate lantern flower

The poisonous lantern flower is much more robust than the Andean berries from South America. Usually it is enough to cover the plant with plenty of sticks in autumn. In the spring it is cut back vigorously - the lantern flower, like almost all Physalis species, reproduces via rhizomes. These are runners that grow directly from the root.

Why hibernate physalis?

Physalis germinate quite reliably and also grow quickly. However, the German summer is usually too short for the numerous fruits to ripen in time for the first frost. If you overwinter your physalis, you shorten the growth time of the plant so that you can harvest as early as July. You can also put the plant in the winter quarters with unripe fruits, because these ripen on the bush.

Tips & Tricks

Physalis, especially the lantern flower, tends to overgrow and can quickly take on amazing proportions. Therefore, you should limit planted specimens as far as possible with root barriers embedded in the ground.
