Help! My olive tree has dried up! - You can do that now

Causes of dried up leaves and twigs

If leaves and / or twigs dry up on an olive tree, this can have several causes:

  • the tree receives too little water
  • the tree is receiving too much water
  • the tree was exposed to cold and frost in winter
  • the tree was overwintered in a location that was too warm

As a rule, olive trees have dried up leaves and twigs if they have been improperly overwintered, ie either outdoors without protection or in a place that is too warm. Olives need the winter rest and feel comfortable in the cold season with a maximum of eight to ten degrees Celsius and sufficient sun. Occasional watering should also not be forgotten.

Olive tree dried up - first aid measures

But don't worry: even if the tree looks pretty lifeless, it is very likely that it will come back. To do this, however, you first have to check whether there is still life in the branches and twigs. To do this, scratch the bark lightly: If the branch below is green, there is still juice in it; if it is brown, on the other hand, it has died. At best, cut dead branches off radically, as well as dried up leaves. Now take the olive out of the pot and check the roots: remove dead roots, leave alive ones on the plant. Dip the root ball in a bucket of lukewarm water and then plant the olive in new soil. Put the pot in a light and warm location - preferably outdoors in spring and summer - and water sparingly. The fewer leaves the olive has, the less water it needs.

Tips & Tricks

To stimulate new leaves to grow, fill a spray bottle with water and liquid fertilizer (1 teaspoon for half a liter of water) and spray the tree all around with the solution. Please carry out this measure only once.
