Remove the roots of the entire plant by hand

Mechanical removal of the bindweed is considered the best, albeit the most complex, method. The thing to note here is that you shouldn't wait too long before putting the fight into action.

How to proceed:

1. Remove bindweed by hand or weed cutter.

2. Dig up the deep roots with a digging fork.

3. Take a sieve and sift through the soil with the roots.

4. Dispose of the root parts separated from the earth (not on the compost) z. B. burn.

When using this method, remember to remove every little root residue from the earth - if you want to have long-term peace from these weeds. Otherwise new plants will form from the root remains and the evil will start all over again ...

Bindweed in the lawn: fight with black sheeting

Bindweed in the lawn can be destroyed well if it is covered over a large area with black foil. This suffocates the plants. The lawn usually recovers. It is best to dig up the earth before covering it with the foil. Leave the foil for several months! Disadvantage: seeds could survive and the plants could sprout again.

Bindweed: replace old earth with new earth

The bindweed rampant in the vegetable patch is a method of replacing the old soil with new soil. But that is time-consuming and possibly costly. Usually, however, one then has a long rest from the bindweed.

Chemistry - a quick and safe solution?

Herbicides should only be used when there is no other option. These are applied directly to the leaves of the bindweed. In the course of this, the plant and its roots are destroyed. But: chemistry does not help in the long term either. Often the bindweed reappears ...

Prevent it from spreading excessively!

Prevention of mass colonization of bindweed:

  • properly dispose of all root remains and cuttings
  • remove as soon as possible (as soon as the first shoots are visible)
  • Bindweed never water or fertilize
  • Mulching free soils
  • new plants e.g. B. kill with boiling water

Tips

Do not confuse the bindweed with the bindweed. In contrast to the white flowering bindweed, the bindweed has pink to bluish flowers and elongated leaves.
