Planting time - rhizome or plant?

In the case of a rhizome: Plant it outdoors in May or in a pot on the balcony. It is important that there is no longer any risk of frost. Otherwise, Canna will freeze to death. The rhizome is welcome. You should only plant a preferred canna plant from a hardware store or a nursery in early summer around mid-June.

Plant in the tub or outdoors

Canna can be grown both outdoors and in a tub. Canna should not be planted outdoors until mid-May at the earliest. In the bucket on the balcony or terrace, the plant can be placed in the sun during the day as early as March when the temperatures are above 10 ° C.

Appropriate location and method of planting

The location that should be offered to the flower tube should ideally be in full sun, warm and protected. The lighter and warmer the better. A place protected from wind and rain on the balcony is advantageous. There the flowers stay longer.

The soil is loosened 30 to 40 cm deep before planting. Compost can be added to the substrate from a depth of 10 cm. The tubers of Canna are placed 5 to 7 cm deep in the earth. The eye must point upwards. Then the tubers are covered with a soil with the following features:

Don't forget to keep a suitable distance from neighboring plants. Depending on the variety, a distance of between 30 and 60 cm should be maintained. After planting, vigorous watering and mulching is recommended.
