Are pistachios dangerous for dogs?

Pistachios are often contaminated with mold

If stored incorrectly, aflatoxins will form on the pistachio kernels. These are fungal toxins that are mainly found in the Aspergillus flavus mold. They are harmful to dogs but also to humans and can cause serious damage to health.

Dogs are more responsive to mold than humans.

Many of the imported pistachios show very high levels of aflatonins.

Pistachios are harmful but not deadly

Mold poisoning from pistachios is usually not fatal, but sensitive dogs can react with liver problems and gastrointestinal disorders.

Most dogs won't do any harm if they steal a few pistachios every now and then. Regular consumption, however, is not recommended.

Tips & Tricks

Store opened pistachio bags in a cool, dry place out of the reach of the dog.
