The difference between passion fruit and maracuja
The two names passion fruit and maracuja are often used synonymously in this country. Another factor contributing to the confusion between passion fruit and passion fruit is that bottles with passion fruit juice usually show the cut passion fruit. The passion fruit is also the fruit of a passion flower, but the fruits look different on the outside despite the similar pulp. Maracujas are passion fruits with a yellow skin, in contrast to the mostly purple to dark brown passion fruits.

Get seeds for growing the passion fruit
Since most passion flowers have very characteristic and magnificent flowers, seeds for growing the plants are also available in well-stocked garden shops. Since it is a tropical plant species that can only be cultivated in this country as a houseplant and container plant, the seeds can be grown all year round. You can also use seeds from commercially available passion fruit, but you must first remove any stuck pulp from them with a piece of kitchen paper. In addition, you should not store the seeds too long before sowing, as passion fruit seeds have only limited viability.
Proper care for growing passion fruit seeds
According to their tropical origin, the seeds of the passion fruit ideally need a germination temperature between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius. Therefore, different locations are available for cultivation:
- in pots covered with cling film on the windowsill
- in a room greenhouse with a heating mat
- in the greenhouse with constant temperatures between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius
If possible, use a growing medium (€ 9.05 at Amazon *) that is free from weed seeds and fungal spores. Since the seeds of the passion fruit sometimes take up to two months to germinate, they are otherwise overgrown by foreign plants. After germination, the plants can be placed in pots on a sunny house wall during the summer months.
Tips & Tricks
Since the passion fruit is a climbing plant, you should give it a trellis or scaffolding to support it. But pay attention to its size so that you can still overwinter the passion fruit in a place with about 10 degrees Celsius.
