When does the rapeseed bloom?

When does the rapeseed bloom?

From harvest to re-blooming

  • Oilseed rape is sown in late summer
  • The plant has to overwinter until flowering
  • the first flowers appear in April
  • the main flowering season is from May to July
  • in July the rape is ripe and ready to be harvested
  • some of the second blossoms are still in the fields in August

Lost flowering time

The rapeseed bloom extends over a very long period of four weeks. Again and again new flowers are formed, so the full development of the rapeseed buds is delayed. First the main shoots bloom, then the side shoots. This leads to irregularities that have a negative effect on the harvest yield. Oilseed rape is considered ripe when dark pods with black seeds have formed from the yellow inflorescences. It can only be threshed when there is little moisture. However, the side shoots lag behind the main shoots with their growth, so that some of them still have to be harvested when they are green.

Information for allergy sufferers

Many people are allergic to the pollen flow caused by the rapeseed blossom. Symptoms such as itchy, swollen and watery eyes and a runny nose threaten as early as April. However, these body reactions mainly cause problems in the main flowering period from May to July. Even after that, those affected often have to struggle with the symptoms. The rape plant continues to bloom well into August.
