Mower line breaks - tips on causes and troubleshooting

A broken mowing line is the undisputed leader in the inglorious ranking of common grass trimmer problems. We have summarized the causes of the annoyance with tips for solving the problem below for you:

  • Unsuitable or too thin thread: wind up the original thread in the thickness specified by the manufacturer
  • Incorrect use: do not trim wet grass, cut off tall grass and light shrubbery in stages, avoid stones
  • Hardened thread material: soak new or too long stored cutting line in water for 24 hours

An incorrect winding technique will tear the cutting line. Do not place the thread too tight or too loosely around the bobbin. With a double thread, the halves must not cross each other. Each half of the thread should be wound in its spool groove so that the material does not get caught and tear.

Most grass trimmers (€ 33.48 at Amazon *) have a mechanical automatic so that a sufficiently long line is always available. If the cutting line is too short, tap the cutting head briefly on the ground while the engine is running. The thread brake is released and a piece of the mowing wire is released. If this automatic threading system does not work, please examine the device for the following causes:

  • Wrapped in the wrong direction: Always thread the replacement thread in the direction of the arrow
  • Mowing line too thick: refer to the operating instructions for the appropriate thickness and replace the line
  • Spool or mowing wire jams: Thoroughly clean the thread mower head of dirt particles, stones or twigs

Edged grass trimmer lines do not wear out as quickly and are less likely to tear. However, the threads often get jammed in the bobbin. If you choose a round, smooth cutting line, the automatic replenishment is less likely to cause problems.

Tips

Grass trimmers with 2-stroke engines often annoy the gardener because the device does not start. If a lack of petrol can be excluded as a cause, please check the condition of the spark plug and air filter. For a cold start, slide in the choke. If the engine is warm, please remove the choke so that your brushcutter (94.07 € on Amazon *) starts.
