Earlier, preferred horned violets should not be planted outdoors at their location. Otherwise there is a risk of frostbite. The horned violets were not hardened in the greenhouse or covered garden center.

Sowing - in the house and in the bed

Sowing differs from planting pre-grown horned violets. First you should consider whether you want to sow the horned violets at home, in the winter garden or directly in the bed. Warning: germination can take a long time. To speed things up, the seeds should be rubbed with sand before sowing. This will scratch the shell and make it easier to break through.

For home and winter garden sowing, the seeds should be sown between March and May. Then it means:

  • Press the seeds lightly and moisten (light germinator)
  • Place in the dark for 10 days and keep the soil moist
  • if cotyledons are visible, move the seed tray to a bright place

Direct sowing in the bed takes place between August and March on a frost-free day. The flowers appear in spring. Alternatively, the seeds can be sown between May and July. Then they will bloom absolutely splendidly next summer.

Tips & Tricks

In general, it is not advisable to plant horned violets during their flowering period. Even the flowering weakens the plant. An additional change of location would mean enormous stress.
