Pomegranate trees are not hardy

Pomegranate trees are not hardy

The easy-care, small-growing plant from the Orient is native to the warm climates. The pomegranate can withstand brief drops in temperature, but not permanent frost. It can be cultivated as a container plant with little effort. In summer you put the bucket on the terrace or balcony in the blazing sun and in winter you bring it in. In the wine-growing regions with mild winter, it can be kept as an outdoor plant.

Overwintering the container plant

As soon as the temperatures drop, the pomegranate tree sheds its leaves. Then it can be taken to a dark, cool and frost-free place to overwinter. It can be a cellar, a winter garden, a heated greenhouse. The temperatures there should in any case not fall below 2 ° C or exceed 10 ° C.

During the winter break, the plant is only watered so much that it does not dry out completely. From February the pomegranate can move to a place where it is warmer and lighter than in winter. After the last frosts, the pomegranate tree can take its place in the garden or on the terrace. A protected spot on the south wall of the house is well suited.

Overwinter outdoors

In the vineyards, where the summers are long and the winters mild, the pomegranate trees can be grown outdoors. You need a sunny, sheltered location. The freshly planted trees should be protected from frost in winter. To do this, you wrap them in straw or fleece mats, the tree slice can also be protected by brushwood and leaves.

If you want to plant a pomegranate tree or bush in the garden, you should pay attention to frost-resistant varieties when buying. These are better suited for wintering outdoors and can withstand temperatures of up to 15 ° C. The following hardy varieties are available in specialist shops:

  • Entekhabi Saveh,
  • Uzbek,
  • Kazaks,
  • Salavatski,
  • Provence.

Tips & Tricks

Those who shy away from the effort of wintering should opt for Punica granatum Nana, which can also be kept as a houseplant with its compact growth.
