What does “penumbra” mean?
While the terms sunny and shady are fairly straightforward, the term “penumbra” should be interpreted differently. Penumbra is not the same as light shadow. Light shadows prevail when, for example, some light falls through the branches of a nearby tree all day. Thus, the perennial does not have full sun, but sunlight every now and then all day.
The situation is different with partial shade: partial shade means that the perennial bed only receives sun for part of the day, usually in the morning or in the evening. The rest of the day it is in the shade. Perennials that are more comfortable in the shade thrive on a partially shaded shrub bed.

Perennials that thrive in partial shade
If sun-hungry perennials such as delphiniums are planted in the partial shade, the flowers are rather weak. In the worst case, the shrub withers and does not bloom at all. Therefore, when creating your planting plan, you should definitely consider their location requirements.
