Grass trimmer thread doesn’t keep up - why is it?

How does a thread mower head actually work?

Grass trimmers (€ 33.48 at Amazon *) are equipped with a cutting head with an integrated spool. A cutting thread is wound onto this spool, the two ends of which protrude from the thread mower head. As the bobbin rotates rapidly, both ends of the thread cut off grass and light bushes.

The longer and more intensively you use your grass trimmer, the more the cutting lines wear out. If the thread becomes so short that it no longer cuts the blades of grass, the thread brake in the mower head must be released. So that the integrated automatic feeds new thread, tap the running grass trimmer once on the ground. The thread brake briefly releases the double thread while the centrifugal force pulls a piece of it forward. An overhang cutter shortens a piece of thread that is too long to the correct length.

Tapping does not let the thread follow - what to do?

If the bobbin does not push the thread after tapping the mower head, the automatic system is blocked. We have compiled the most common causes with tips for solving problems for you here:

  • Thread wound in the wrong direction: unwind and wind in the opposite direction
  • Thread is stuck: unwind, clean bobbin and thread, wind up a little looser
  • Thread too thick: read the correct thickness in the operating instructions and replace the cutting thread
  • Spool damaged: buy and insert a new spool that is compatible with the model

Cutting lines made of abrasive, rough material and with three to six edges are particularly durable. They also do not tear as quickly when they come into contact with stones. All resistance is pointless if the thread gets jammed in the bobbin due to its angular shape and does not follow suit. You should therefore switch to a round, smooth thread that the automatic system can move more easily.

Tips

If the line on the grass trimmer breaks continuously, the material has lost its elasticity. Have you just bought the cutting line or have you stored it for a long time? Then soak the wire or the entire coil in water for 24 to 48 hours before the next use.
