How to plant basil seeds in an exemplary manner

The best date for sowing

At the beginning of April, the time window for sowing on the windowsill opens. The lighting conditions are bright enough so that the seedlings do not die. If basil seeds are sown too early, the plants develop long horny shoots under the scant daylight in the desperate search for every single ray of sunshine. In addition, they are perfectly mature within 4-6 weeks for relocation to the garden or balcony.

Instructions for sowing

The basil seeds obtained by hand or bought are ideally soaked in chamomile tea for a few hours before sowing. This raises the germination mood and prevents mold growth. Then proceed as follows:

  • fill a seed bowl or potty with potting soil, peat sand, perlite (€ 32.90 on Amazon *) or coconut fibers
  • Moisten the substrate with a fine shower
  • then scatter the seeds in order to only press them down as a light sprout
  • Pull a foil over the seed pot or place a pane of glass on top of it
  • wait for the cotyledons in the partially shaded window seat at 20-25 degrees Celsius
  • keep the basil seeds constantly moist

If the delicate cotyledons break out of the seeds, the cover has done its job. Continue to keep the seed slightly moist without causing waterlogging. In this phase, the plants must not come under blazing sunshine.

How to prick basil seedlings correctly

From a height of 4-5 centimeters the seed pot is crowded. High time to separate the seedlings. Since it will take some time before planting out in mid-May, prick out the young plants in small pots. Here they will develop their own root system over the next few days and weeks. How to proceed:

  • Half-fill 9 cm pots with pricking soil, peat growing media or a mixture of potting soil and sand
  • Make a recess in it with the pricking stick
  • lift a seedling out of the earth with the prick stick or a spoon
  • Place in the well and surround with substrate up to the lower pair of leaves
  • ideally, you water the basil plants from below by placing the pots in 2-3 centimeters high water

Until the royal herb moves into the field, care is limited to regular watering. From the beginning of May, it is advantageous to place the herb plants on the balcony or in a sunny garden place during the day to harden them. Until the ice saints have passed, the plants spend the nights in the protected surroundings of the house or winter garden.
