The heyday of the laurel cherry

When does the cherry laurel bloom?

Depending on the variety, the flowering period extends from April to June. Some species have a somewhat more sparse secondary flowering in September. The white to pale beige colored flowers stand together in terminal, racemose inflorescences and spread an intense, aromatic scent that attracts many insects. These also take care of the fertilization of the flowers, from which the spherical fruits, initially green and later black, develop.

Tips & Tricks

The flesh of the laurel cherry tastes pleasantly sweet; however, the core inside is poisonous when bitten into. If there is a risk that children could nibble on the fruit, you should cut back the hedge after flowering or consistently remove all faded inflorescences.
