When can you repair the hedge trimmer yourself?

You cannot rectify electronic defects or problems with the engine yourself unless you are an electrician or a specialist in engine technology. However, in most cases you cannot easily know whether the cause of the damage is the motor or the electronics. So what can you do?

You can rule out that the problem is caused by dirt or rust. You can also locate and repair loose screws and blunt knives yourself.

So do the following.

Repair hedge trimmers yourself

  • screwdriver
  • Old rag
  • Metal brush
  • Resin cleaner
  • oil
  • Gear lubricant

1. For your safety

Remove all power supplies to prevent the hedge trimmer from starting while repairing. Put on gloves to protect yourself from injury.

2. Unscrew

Turn the hedge trimmer over, remove the screws from the gear cover and take it off. Remove all other unscrewed individual parts and loosen the fastening screws of the knife blades. Here we explain in detail how to dismantle your hedge trimmer.

3. Fix problems

Is the hedge trimmer very dirty? Use the metal brush to remove coarse dirt such as leaves and branches from both the inside of the housing and the knife blades.

Then clean any corners you can get with a resin dissolving agent and / or some oil that you put on a dry cloth.

4. Oils

Oil all metal parts of your hedge trimmer, including screws. You can find out how to do this here.

The hedge trimmer does not cut

If the knife blades move, but the hedge trimmer still does not cut, then it is probably blunt. In these instructions we explain how you sharpen your hedge trimmer yourself.
