Moving young strawberry plants correctly

Prepare the bed perfectly

While the selected runners are still busy rooting in close association with their mother plants, the new location is being prepared for the offspring. This timing is important because young strawberry plants do not grow or grow very poorly in freshly tilled soil.

  • in principle, put into a bed that had not housed any strawberries in the 4 years before
  • the location is sunny, with nutrient-rich, humus-rich and slightly acidic soil
  • Weed the soil thoroughly and loosen it deeply
  • Incorporate a generous portion of compost with horn shavings (€ 6.39 at Amazon *)
  • alternatively, use well-rotted cattle manure or horse manure

It should take at least 3 to 4 weeks until you transplant the strawberries that you have moved here. It is therefore advisable to start preparing the bed at the same time as the propagation. Incidentally, this premise for transplanting also applies if you favor sowing strawberry seeds for breeding.

Instructions for transplanting strawberries

Forward-looking hobby gardeners pull the selected offshoots in clay pots that have been sunk into the ground. The result is a completely uncomplicated relocation to the new location. Experience has shown that in late summer the young plants are sufficiently rooted in the nursery pot. So it goes step by step:

  • Cut the offshoots from the mother plant with a sharp knife
  • Dig up the pot and let the root ball soak in a vessel with water
  • meanwhile dig a planting hole without digging up the ground beforehand
  • place the potted strawberry plant in it and water it
  • Transplant so deep that the heart bud is just above the surface of the earth

If you want to move the young plant into the flower box, spread a drainage there over the water drain. Inorganic materials such as chippings (€ 44.95 at Amazon *) or crushed pottery shards are possible. Transplant here at the correct distance of 20 to 25 centimeters.

Tips & Tricks

Experience has shown that strawberries produce better fruit in the hobby garden if you plant different varieties next to each other. Although strawberry plants are self-fertile, bees and bumblebees simply put more effort into pollination.
