Magnolia does not bloom, what to do?

Garden owners need a lot of patience

Do not be surprised if the magnolia you planted four years ago simply does not want to bloom - many specimens only show their blooms after several years. So don't lose your patience, just wait and keep hoping ... at some point your magnolia will bloom too and compensate you for the long wait! Magnolias are not native to us by nature, but originally come from Asia or North America. In addition, they are real divas who first have to acclimate to a new location.

Some magnolias only bloom in summer

However, some magnolia varieties actually only bloom in summer. These late blooming varieties do not open until June / July. If your specimen does not show any buds in spring, then just check the variety label, maybe you just caught such a late-blooming tree. Incidentally, some tulip magnolias bloom a second time in August, albeit not as profusely as in the first spring bloom.

Check conditions

If your magnolia does not want to bloom, this may also be due to unsuitable conditions. The exotic trees are very sensitive and need a good, sunny and sheltered location as well as humus-rich, slightly acidic soil. In addition, magnolias do not like it when their root area has been underplanted with ground cover, lawn or other plants. The roots grow very close to the surface of the earth, and underplanting draws moisture from the soil. Magnolias do not like a lack of moisture either, which is why they should be watered regularly in dry seasons and in hot summers. Magnolias kept in a room usually do not bloom either.

Tips & Tricks

If your magnolia does not bloom, please do not attack it with scissors - the sensitive plant does not tolerate radical pruning in particular. For this reason, a cut is only useful for dead or diseased branches and for thinning out a crown that is too dense.
