Cutting bush roses - all questions answered

One pruning per year - for every bush rose

Each bush rose should be visited and examined for a cut at least once a year. Trimming is highly recommended to remove frozen, dead branches. These weaken the bush rose unnecessarily. The consequences of such a pruning include:

  • lush growth
  • long flowering period
  • many flowers
  • Prevention of balding
  • Disease prevention

Cut back low bush rose varieties to about 15 to 20 cm! Taller varieties can be cut down to 50 cm. Remember: the weaker the plant, the more it should be pruned!

When is the cut back?

It would be perfect if you think about pruning the bush rose in spring. Between March and April is the ideal time. It is important that there is no more frost during the day. Many a gardener orientates himself on the heyday of the forsythia. When they bloom, the bush roses can be cut without hesitation.

Take care too!

The following pointers should also be kept in mind:

  • remove diseased, crossing, inward-growing shoots
  • Cutting keeps the plant healthy and strong
  • when cutting, start over an outward-facing eye
  • use sharp, clean rose scissors
  • Wear gloves (protection from the thorns)
  • cut slightly diagonally (rain runs off better - risk of fungal diseases is reduced)

Would you like your bush rose to develop strong shoots that bloom vigorously? Then cut them back more radically! Or would you like your rose bush to grow bushier and finer? Then cut it less!

Remove old flowers in summer

A cut in summer is advisable not only for climbing roses and hybrid tea roses. Bush roses should ideally also be cleaned regularly in summer. In the course of care, it is advisable to cut away the old flowers in order to encourage the new (flower) budding.

Cutting to obtain cuttings

Do you want to increase the rose bush? Then don't hesitate, grab your scissors and cut cuttings!

  • between June and August
  • Head cuttings
  • with 5 eyes and a withered flower
  • submerge in willow water
  • Remove the flower and 2/3 of the leaves (cut the remaining leaves in half)
  • put in the bed
  • keep moist

Tips

Before planting the bush roses, it is advisable to use the scissors briefly to shorten the roots. This stimulates root formation and the roots branch out better.
