Why and how to hibernate the cape basket

Cape basket - not sufficiently hardy

The Cape Marguerite originally comes from South Africa and is therefore not sufficiently hardy in our latitudes. Its temperature minimum is -5 ° C. Thus it freezes to death if it is left outside unprotected during the winter.

The ideal wintering quarters

For wintering, choose a location for the cape basket that has the following characteristics:

  • bright (continues to grow in winter because it is evergreen)
  • well suited: winter garden, cold house, gazebo, stairwell
  • Frost free
  • At a cool temperature of 5 to 15 ° C

Care during the winter

Since this plant is evergreen, it needs care even in winter. It should be watered sparingly so that the soil does not dry out. You should refrain from adding fertilizer! It is also recommended to check the cap basket for pests. It is also beneficial to ventilate the wintering room regularly.

After the winter

When spring slowly approaches and with it the warmer days, you can slowly get your cape basket used to direct sunlight again. First, put it in the shade and gradually give it more hours of sunshine.

The perennial can really 'take off' from mid-May. Then there is usually no more threat of frost. But first it should be cut back hand-high. Then pouring is extremely important!

Tips

It is pointless to overwinter the cape daisy outdoors. There are too often temperatures below freezing in winter. This would mean the quick end for this African perennial.
