Parsley's bad and good neighbors

Parsley's bad and good neighbors

Good neighbors of parsley

The aromatic herb gets along quite well with some plants. The prerequisite is that it is not an umbelliferous plant and that the neighbors prefer approximately the same soil conditions.

If the conditions are right, the mixed culture plants protect each other from pests and make optimal use of the soil.

Onions are a good example. If you sow cabbage parsley between the rows of onions, you will drive away both the onion fly and the carrot fly, which otherwise causes a lot of problems for the parsley.

Plants that are suitable for mixed cultivation with parsley

  • Onions
  • leek
  • tomatoes
  • Strawberries
  • Cucumbers

Mixed culture for parsley roots

Good neighbors for parsley roots are:

  • Kale
  • Beans
  • Broccol
  • Endive

Place the marigolds with the parsley

To prevent infestation by nematodes and earth fleas, you can plant marigolds very well near the parsley. But take good care of the bed so that the marigold does not overgrow the parsley.

Lettuce is a bad neighbor

Salads of all kinds go very well with parsley on the plate - this neighborhood doesn't work at all on the bed. Never plant lettuce and parsley together.

Parsley is incompatible with itself

Like all umbelliferae, parsley should never be planted on the same bed for two years in a row. No umbellifers should be in the same location for at least three years, or even better for four years.

These include:

  • Carrots
  • celery
  • dill
  • fennel
  • chervil

So you have to look for a different bed for your parsley every two years. If you don't heed this tip, you're not just leaching out too much. They also promote the reproduction of nematodes and other pests.

Tips & Tricks

If you are cultivating a larger garden, you will quickly lose track of where and which plants have been. To be on the safe side, make a plan every year in which you enter the location of the annual and biennial vegetables, herbs and flowers.
