High bushes as privacy screens in the garden

Suitable shrubs with sufficiently strong and tall growth

As plant material for a high level of privacy protection, shrubs should be selected that show rapid and strong growth. Most of the following plant species are not necessarily very picky about location and care conditions, either:

  • Ornamental currant
  • Buddleia
  • Cherry laurel
  • Barberry
  • Farm jasmine
  • liguster
  • Forsythia
  • Kolkwitzia
  • Firethorn
  • Dogwood

  • Tall plants as attractive privacy screens

These shrub-like plants should be cut regularly on the sides from a height of about one meter in order to force the growth in height.

Different types of privacy hedges made from bushes

The decision to use a certain privacy screen made from shrubs is usually made for a period of at least a decade. Accordingly, before planting, you should think about whether you would like to plant a uniformly green hedge made of cherry laurel, privet, etc. or a colorful hedge made of flowering shrubs. In addition, there are also differences in terms of seasonal or year-round foliage: while the cherry laurel, for example, has its dense leaves all year round, the different types of dogwood shed their leaves in autumn. Since they are not evergreen, they are no less decorative in winter with their often conspicuous bark colors, but only offer limited privacy protection.

Precise planning saves work and trouble

With a natural privacy screen made of flowering (or evergreen) shrubs, not only the question of the exact arrangement of the different types of plants according to their color and flowering time arises before planting. Since most types of shrub cannot be brought into shape nearly as slenderly as a hedge made from Thuja occidentalis Smaragd, it is essential to keep sufficient space between them and neighboring properties when planting.

Tips

Strong-growing shrubs can provide plenty of clippings up to twice a year when they are older. With a high-quality garden shredder, you can shred the shrub clippings immediately after the cut and use it as mulch material for beds.
