Which fireplaces are suitable for the balcony and terrace?

Suitable fire places for the terrace

On the terrace, however, for obvious reasons, you cannot simply light a simple campfire on the terrace floor: This would be very resentful of such treatment. Ergo, the fire should always be in a fireproof container. Nevertheless, the terrace floor itself must also be fireproof or the fireplace must be on such a base. Even flying sparks shouldn't set furniture or wooden floors on fire straight away.

Fire baskets and braziers

So-called fire baskets made of iron or fire bowls are very suitable for the terrace, and an old car rim can also be quickly converted into a fire-proof container. These open containers make it easier for you to dispose of the ash and also stay dry when not in use by simply turning them over. You put the deposited logs in the hollow, whereby you must never burn fresh wood or even garden or kitchen waste - this quickly leads to nasty arguments with the neighbors, whether the smoke that arises. Also, do not dispose of the ashes the next morning, because then it is often still hot and you will burn your fingers.

Barbecue or garden fireplace

Instead of an open fireplace, there is also a barbecue or garden fireplace built from clinker or fireclay bricks on the terrace. There are various models available on the market as a finished kit. Fireplaces with a classic, cuboid combustion chamber usually have slide-in rails for a grillage. The first embers can be used to grill a steak or freshly caught fish.

Swivel grill

A swivel grill can be used not only for grilling, but also as a fireplace. You can light the fire in the early afternoon, then the wood has time to develop the appropriate embers. Then swivel the grill grate over it if necessary and place the meat and fish on top. Baked potatoes are cooking between the coals and everyone is holding their stick bread over the fire.

Seating around the fireplace

Seating around an open fire should always be set up at a sufficient distance so that clothing and people are not harmed by the flying sparks. Conventional chairs and benches are suitable, but you can also get creative and offer, for example, wooden stumps, whole tree trunks or even large boulders.

Tips

Unlike a real campfire, you don't need government approval for a fixed fireplace on the patio. Even so, you should talk to your neighbors and position the fire so that smoke and barbecue smells do not bother the people living next to you.
