Maintain and raise the Fuchsia tribe properly

The right location for your fuchsia tribe

Like so many fuchsias, fuchsia trunks prefer a bright spot, but where they don't want to be exposed to direct sun. There are some sun-tolerant varieties, but as typical rainforest plants, fuchsias need light shade. A moderately nutrient-rich, loose and humus-rich soil is suitable as a substrate. Above all, pay attention to good pot drainage, because fuchsias do not tolerate waterlogging.

This is how you train a cutting to become a standard fuchsia trunk

In order to successfully train a young fuchsia cuttling to become a fuchsia trunk, you need a lot of patience - and the right variety. Choose a vigorous, as upright as possible (some semi-hanging ones are also suitable) fuchsia and cut about 10 to 15 centimeters long cuttings from it in July.

  • Remove all but the top four sheets.
  • Plant the cuttings in a mixture of sand and peat
  • or alternatively in commercially available potting soil.
  • Put the nursery pots (€ 14.90 at Amazon *) in a protected place.
  • The cuttings are rooted as soon as new leaves form.
  • Plant the rooted cuttings in a mixture of sand and universal or potting soil.
  • Remove any new leaves and shoots.
  • If necessary, support the young fuchsia with a plant stick.

Further leaves and shoots are removed from the main stem until it has reached the desired height. Now you can let them grow and shape the crown of the tree by cutting back.

Cut the fuchsia trunk correctly

Regularly before putting it in the winter quarters, you should cut back the fuchsia trunk by about a third to half, especially removing the flower shoots and yellowed and dried up shoots. The actual shape cut finally takes place in February, shortly before the end of the winter break. In doing so, you take back the annual shoots from the previous year to a maximum of two pairs of leaves and also cut away dried up and dead shoots. Regular pruning is very important for fuchsias, otherwise the plants will age from the inside and develop fewer and fewer flowers.

Tips

Make sure that you cut as little as possible into the old wood - depending on the type and variety, it will be very difficult for your high fuchsia trunk to sprout from it.
