It is best to pour Drosera using the damming method. To do this, place the pot in a deep saucer that you keep constantly filled with water. To avoid waterlogging, create a drainage made of gravel or sand at the bottom of the pot.

In winter you should increase the humidity. Place bowls filled with water on the heater. But ventilate sufficiently so that no mold forms.

Does sundew need fertilizer?

Carnivorous plants are generally not fertilized. They get their nutrients from the trapped insects, but above all from the substrate and the reserves stored in the leaves.

Does Drosera have to be fed?

Feeding sundew is not necessary. If you do want to give it a try, never put dead insects on the leaves. Do not feed more than one animal at a time.

How bright must sundew be kept?

Sundew likes it very bright. The plant needs a very sunny location outdoors. When keeping the plant in the room, place the plant as brightly as possible and ensure high humidity.

With tropical and subtropical species, the use of additional lighting is recommended, especially in winter.

Can sundew go outside in summer?

As long as the temperatures outside are high enough, you are welcome to put sundew on the terrace or balcony.

However, the plants then need more water.

When does Drosera have to be repotted?

The plant substrate degrades over time. Regular repotting is therefore essential.

The best time to move is early spring. The old substrate is completely removed and replaced with fresh carnivorous soil.

What diseases and pests to watch out for?

  • Snails
  • Spider mites
  • Mould

Snails occur in the open air or when the plant has been outside in summer. Collect the snails and dispose of the clutch as well.

Spider mites often infest sundew. Hosing down only helps to a limited extent. In the case of valuable species, you should use special products from specialist gardeners.

If there is mold, you have to repot the sundew in the pot and remove all infected parts of the plant.

How is sundew overwintered?

Hardy varieties stay outside all year round. In the case of species that are grown as houseplant, overwintering depends on the particular variety. Most tropical species cannot tolerate freezing temperatures.

Tips

Sundew can be propagated from seeds, leaf cuttings or root cuttings. Propagation via leaf cuttings is the easiest. The plants that are propagated in this way often bloom in the same year.
