Skillfully repot succulents - this is how you do it right

The best date is in spring

Switching to a new pot with fresh succulent soil means pure stress for every succulent plant. A point in time in the middle of the summer growth period is therefore only useful in emergencies. The phase between the end of the winter dormancy and the beginning of the main growing season is more suitable.

Instructions for repotting succulents - this is how it works

If the roots and side shoots come right up to the edge of the pot, it is high time to move to a larger pot. The diameter of this should be so large that there is one to two fingers-wide space between the root ball and the edge of the pot. Please only use vessels that have one or more floor openings as a water drain. How to proceed step by step:

  • Spread potsherds or expanded clay on the bottom of the pot (€ 17.50 on Amazon *) as drainage
  • Place a water and air permeable fleece over it
  • Pour in a first layer of succulent soil and press down
  • Pot the plant and remove the old substrate
  • Cut off damaged, diseased roots with a disinfected knife
  • Place in the middle of the fresh soil

While holding the succulent with one hand, fill in the fresh soil with the other hand. It is important to note that the previous planting depth is retained. Press the substrate a little for a good ground contact. Freshly repotted succulents are allowed to recover from stress for 8 days in the partially shaded location. Then start the usual maintenance program again.

Tips

Repotting cacti with strong thorns poses a high risk of injury. While these succulents are not poisonous, they can still cause infections if their spikes tear your skin. Therefore, please wear thorn-resistant gloves. Small cacti can be comfortably held with barbecue tongs. Take large specimens between two polystyrene sheets without touching the sharp spikes.
