Which gladioli are allowed to hibernate outside?

Frost-resistant gladioli

These varieties are usually somewhat smaller-flowered than the well-known breeding gladioli. But this is what makes the winter hardy varieties so appealing, and they do very well in natural gardens. They bloom a little earlier than gladioli that are planted in spring. If you plant both hardy and breeding gladioli, you can extend the flowering period without having to put gladiolus bulbs into the ground after a delay.

Winter protection necessary

Frost-resistant gladioli that overwinter outdoors also need adequate protection from the cold. Since the cover stays on earth for weeks or even months, it is important that the protective coat lets enough air through. A lack of oxygen inevitably leads to rot, which can extend to the roots.

Tips

In rough areas it is advisable to get the frost-resistant varieties from the ground and to overwinter in a suitable place like normal breeding gladioli. The room should be as cool as possible so that the gladioli do not sprout prematurely.
