Beans from your own garden - this is how sowing works

Direct sowing in the bed

You start sowing the beans in mid-May, when the ice saints are over. Then the floor temperature should have warmed up to the necessary 10 degrees Celsius.

Since beans only need about 100 days to ripen, you can sow them until July. Staggered or grown one after the other, you benefit from a long bean harvest.

Before sowing, loosen the soil of the bean bed again.

Use two sticks and a string to mark a row for the seed. If you are growing several rows with beans, the distance between the rows should be approx. 80 cm.

Within the rows, the beans are mainly planted in clumps. This is especially true for runner beans and fire beans. You can sow French beans along the rows both in clumps and individually.

This is how the sowing succeeds

  • along the line or cord with the plant iron or your hands every 40 to 50 cm a 3 cm

dig deep hole

  • Put 3 to 5 seeds in it and cover with soil
  • Alternatively, lay out the bush beans individually at a distance of 6 to 8 cm
  • pour carefully

Advantage through soaking and pre-germination

You can germinate the seeds faster by soaking the hard shell of the beans in water for 24 hours before sowing.

It is also possible to pre-germinate the beans on the windowsill. To do this, the seeds are sown in small pots, placed in a warm place and planted in the bed after the ice saints.

Tips

The bean sowing can be easily marked with small garden pins: Simply write the type of bean on the label and place it at the beginning of the line.
