Securely attach clematis to a facade - this is how it works

Fasten clematis with rope systems

Mighty clematis, such as Clematis montana, can easily grow to heights of 8 meters and more. In order to securely attach these majestic climbing plants as facade greening, rope systems are primarily used. These are wall-tied stainless steel wire ropes that, due to their flexibility, leave no design wish unfulfilled. The following variants are particularly recommended:

  • Close-meshed climbing nets with high rope density for large-flowered, medium-high clematis
  • Cable systems in an arrangement of standing rectangles for the robust Italian clematis Clematis viticella
  • Trellis with U-shaped rope covering for greening free-standing walls and pergolas
  • Modern wall grilles made of stainless steel rods, supplemented by cross clamps for individual cable routing

Whichever system you use to attach a clematis to the facade, its urge to grow vertically should always be taken into account. It is not enough to offer the plant horizontal climbing aids. It will only stretch its shoots here when they are directed in the desired direction as part of the annual pruning.

Tips

Every climbing aid for a clematis should keep a distance of at least 8-10 centimeters to the wall. Otherwise there is a risk of disease infestation due to the lack of ventilation of the rear tendrils.

Fix small clematis to wooden trellises

A beautifully blooming clematis not only fulfills the task of a facade greening. Relatively small species, such as the Clematis alpina, also serve as a wonderful privacy screen on the balcony or terrace. To do this, plant the clematis in a flower box (€ 13.18 on Amazon *) with an integrated trellis. Fasten the lower tendrils to the struts with bast tape or special clips. With the help of its long leaf stalks, the clematis climbs the climbing aid on its own.

Tips

Clematis montana develops extra long petioles with which it can encompass profiles of up to 90 mm in diameter. This clematis is particularly well suited for the greening of large facades if stable climbing aids are to be installed that can carry the enormous weight of plants growing several meters high.
