Debarking a tree trunk - This is how it works

Debark the tree trunk with a paring knife or pull knife

The traditional way to debark the tree trunk by hand with a paring or pulling knife. Peeling irons are available in different qualities and have been specially designed for this purpose. The pull knives, on the other hand, are only suitable for smaller pieces of wood, but not for a whole tree trunk. Manual peeling of a log is both time-consuming and physically demanding. It also has the disadvantage that the knife marks can then be seen in the wood. When debarking with a paring knife or draw knife, be sure to put on sturdy work gloves and only use devices with a sharp blade. Both reduce the risk of injury.

Debark with a high pressure cleaner or sandblaster

If you don't want to get your hands dirty, you can also use a high pressure cleaner or sandblaster to remove the bark from the tree trunk. However, this method is only suitable if the pressure is set accordingly high. When working with these devices, you should wear protective clothing - especially protective goggles! - and observe the safety regulations. However, you can also have this work done by a mobile professional: there is sure to be a company near you with a sandblaster or high-pressure cleaner (€ 85.90 at Amazon *) who can come to your home on request.

Debarking by soaking beforehand

If you have a pond or other body of water nearby, you can water the tree trunk for a few days as well. Cover it completely with water. The bark can then be easily peeled off by hand, but the wood must be carefully dried for a long time before further processing.

Tips

If you have a wood processing company nearby (e.g. a sawmill), why not pay them a visit. These companies work with a peeling machine and can peel the tree trunk for you with a fee.
