Storing broccoli - this is how you store the vitamin-rich vegetables correctly

What you should always consider

Make sure to catch fresh broccoli when buying. You can easily tell by the color: Dark green or blue-green florets indicate that it is a good broccoli. A light green or even yellowish specimen, on the other hand, is about to or is about to spoil. So keep your hands off it. Even with brown spots, you should not take the vegetables.

It is important to store broccoli separately from fruits and vegetables that ripen afterwards, such as apples and pears, bananas or tomatoes. This is because they evaporate the ripening gas ethylene - which means that broccoli and other vegetable or fruity neighbors rot faster.

How to store broccoli

You can store broccoli in the refrigerator or - for a shelf life of several months - freeze it. In terms of storage in the refrigerator, there are again various options:

  • in plastic wrap
  • as a bouquet
  • in damp kitchen paper

Store broccoli in plastic wrap

Broccoli is usually sold in plastic sleeves - but without holes. When storing, it is important that the vegetables can "breathe". We therefore advise you to poke a few small holes in the cover. This promotes air permeability. So you can store the broccoli in the refrigerator - preferably in the vegetable drawer. It lasts for about three to five days.

Store broccoli as a bouquet

Unconventional but effective:

  1. Fill a sufficiently large bowl with a little water (1.5 centimeters).
  2. Place the broccoli in the bowl with the stem down.
  3. The head should protrude over the edge of the bowl.
  4. Cover the head loosely with a perforated plastic bag.
  5. Place the broccoli like this in the refrigerator.
  6. Change the water every day.

With this method, the vegetables usually last five to seven days.

Store broccoli in damp kitchen paper

This variant mimics the functionality of automatic humidification systems that are used in supermarkets.

  1. Fill an empty, clean and originally harmless (no caustic agent) spray bottle with cold water.
  2. Spray the head of the broccoli evenly.
  3. Wrap the vegetables loosely in kitchen paper.
  4. The paper absorbs the moisture and keeps the broccoli fresh.
  5. Put the vegetables in the fridge like this.

The wrapped broccoli remains edible for about three days.

Freeze broccoli

  1. Cut the broccoli into florets.
  2. Blanch the pieces for about three minutes.
  3. Soak the florets again in ice water for three minutes.
  4. Drain the pieces in a colander.
  5. Carefully dry the florets with kitchen paper.
  6. Fill the pieces into freezer bags in portions.
  7. Seal the bags airtight.
  8. Put the freezer bags in the freezer.

Broccoli keeps its freshness for at least six months, sometimes even a year.
