The fruit of a Monstera deliciosa - tips for optics and enjoyment

Long ripening time produces mighty fruit cobs

A delicious window leaf will bloom in the optimal location when it is 10 years old or more. The typical flowers of an arum plant develop cobs with a length of up to 20 cm in the course of 12 months. There is a creamy white, edible pulp under a shell of dark green plates. In view of this long ripening time, a plant can have flowers, unripe and ripe fruits at the same time.

Tips for delicious enjoyment

You will not get any pleasure from eating an unripe Monstera deliciosa fruit. In this condition the pulp is hard and extremely sour in taste. The high content of oxalic acid will be very hard on even a robust stomach. A delicious window leaf lives up to its name under the following premises:

  • The previously dark green shell has turned light green
  • The small plates can be easily removed or fall off by themselves
  • The flesh is creamy white and soft
  • The fruit gives off an aromatic scent reminiscent of peach

You can eat the fruit fresh like a corn on the cob. The taste and texture of the pulp are similar to pineapples and bananas, which is where the joking name pineapple banana comes from. With a content of 77.8 percent water, 1.8 percent protein and 0.85 percent minerals per 100 grams, you can enjoy a healthy fruit that, thanks to a meager 74 calories, does not land on your hips.

Tips

A delicious window leaf is often wrongly offered in the trade as a philodendron. Although both houseplants belong to the arum family, they represent two different genera. This can have fatal consequences, as the fruits of a philodendron are poisonous and cause nausea after consumption. When purchasing the plant, therefore, ask specifically for the botanical name Monstera deliciosa.
