Ytong: Easy to work stone, ideal for building garden sheds

What is ytong

In technical jargon, Ytong is often referred to as aerated concrete stone. The white building material consists of lime, sand, cement and water. The stone is not compact, but has innumerable small air pores inside. This makes it lightweight despite its high strength, which is also extremely easy to process.

The preliminary work

These do not differ from those that would be required for a stable garden house (7.70 € on Amazon *) made of wood or brick:

  • Draw an exact blueprint.
  • Obtain building permission from the building authorities.
  • Pour the foundation, in this case a plate foundation is recommended.

Brick garden houses can be built with a cellar. This can be worthwhile if you need additional storage space for the harvested vegetables.

Required materials:

  • A sufficient amount of Ytong stones
  • Thin-bed mortar (it is essential to mix according to the manufacturer's instructions)
  • cement
  • water
  • Insulating film

Tool list:

  • saw
  • angle
  • Rubber mallet
  • bucket
  • Drill (€ 43.99 at Amazon *) with mixing attachment
  • trowel
  • Plumb bob
  • Spirit level
  • Guideline
  • Pegs for tensioning the line

Special features when building walls with Ytong

Ytong stones must be sealed to the subsurface. Therefore, lay several layers of special insulating foil under the first row of stones. Align the stones very precisely, even the smallest deviations can lead to instability. Check the course of the wall regularly with the spirit level and the plumb line. As with other stones, masonry is staggered. This is relatively uncomplicated because aerated concrete can be cut in half with a saw.

Tips

A precise construction plan is essential for a brick garden shed. From this you can see where the doors and windows will be positioned. Suitable wooden frames serve as placeholders. These are walled with a U-profile, also made of aerated concrete.
