Don't just mow turf - that's the right way

Don't just mow turf - that's the right way

Constancy is the key

Immediately after laying the turf, you set the course for a permanently deep green and dense carpet. Regular mowing plays a central role in the maintenance program, because this is how you create a stable density of grains on the grass. This improves the resistance of ready-made turf to any stress and the stalks get used to the optimal cutting height. How to handle it right:

  • Mow newly laid grass for the first time after 5 to 8 days
  • From March to September cut the green at least once a week
  • In autumn do not stop mowing until after the first frost

The only exception is the shadow lawn, which is content with a mowing rhythm of 10 to 12 days.

The type of lawn defines the ideal cutting height

The rule of thumb for the perfect cutting height of turf is 4 to 5 centimeters. You should never cut lawns shorter than 3.5 centimeters. If you want to match the cutting height perfectly to the lawn, you should use the following guidelines:

  • Cut ornamental lawns 40-45 mm in normal weather, 45-50 mm in wet conditions
  • Shorten sports and play turf to 35-40 mm for average use
  • Do not cut shadow lawns shorter than 70-80 mm and say goodbye to winter with 90 mm
  • In the very dry summer, add a length of 10-20 mm to all values

The golden rule of one thirds serves as a practical reminder for the correct cutting of turf. Accordingly, you should always adjust the lawnmower so that it shortens the grass by a maximum of a third. If the optimum cutting height is not achieved, a second pass follows.

The 3 top commandments for correct lawn mowing

If the rhythm of mowing the lawn gets out of step while on vacation, it is just as little a drama as the finished lawn a few millimeters too short or too long. However, anyone who disregards the following 3 commandments when cutting lawns will have to contend with fatal consequences:

  • Never cut turf when it is wet
  • Under no circumstances should you mow a lawn in the blazing midday sun
  • Do not treat the lawn with blunt knives

In addition, a lawn should not be stepped on before mowing, as this results in an irregular cutting pattern. Regularly sharpening the lawnmower blades also helps keep your green business card looking accurate.

Tips & Tricks

Mowing the lawn according to the lunar calendar is no longer a myth. Even seasoned practitioners swear by it based on years of positive experience. One look at the position of the moon is enough to recognize the right time. When the moon is waning, you cut turf just before the sickle reaches its lowest point. Then the green grows more slowly and denser.
