Schopflavender - cut what has faded in good time

Cut back the potted lavender every year

Even if the potty lavender is very different in terms of its care from the other types of lavender, it is similar to them in one respect: All types of lavender must be cut back at least once a year to counteract balding. If lavender bushes are not pruned, they become heavily lignified and therefore unsightly - in addition, no new shoots and thus flowers sprout from the old wood. A strong cut always stimulates the plant to new shoots and brings a splendid flowering time.

Cutting the coppice lavender - instructions

The best time to cut the topped lavender is early spring, when no new shoots have developed. An autumn pruning should be avoided, as this robs the plant of the strength to survive the winter. Incidentally, potted lavender is not hardy and should therefore not be planted in the garden. When trimming back, proceed as follows:

  • Use sharp scissors for cutting, e.g. B. a rose or hedge shears. (€ 135.56 at Amazon *)
  • The tool should also be clean so that no pathogens or fungi can lodge.
  • It is best to prune in March, but no later than April.
  • Too late a cut ensures that not enough shoots and thus not enough flowers can develop.
  • Cut back the whole bush by at least half - even better by two thirds.
  • However, be careful not to cut into the old wood.
  • If the pruning is too deep, the plant will not sprout again or only with difficulty.

Don't cut flowers too late

You can often tell that your French lavender is beginning to wither by the fading color of the flowers. You should prune what has faded by the beginning / middle of August, because then the plant can invest its energy in a second flowering period instead of producing seeds. In this way, you can considerably extend the already long flowering time of this type of lavender. However, do not cut back later than August, otherwise you will rob the plant of the strength it needs for the winter.

Rejuvenate poppy lavender

If lavender isn't pruned regularly, it will lignify and literally fall apart. However, only a few leaves and no flowers develop on heavily lignified branches, so that the bush becomes bald. In order to rejuvenate an old lavender, you have to cut it back a lot - however, here too, you must not cut into the old wood. You should also only carry out the rejuvenation pruning in spring or early summer so that the plant can recover.

Tips & Tricks

Pot lavender can be cut with little effort: Simply gather all the shoots together with a ribbon and cut this crop with hedge trimmers below the ribbon.
