Do French beans need a climbing aid?

Why French beans don't need climbing support

French beans reach a height of no more than half a meter and - as their name suggests - grow bushy. They also do not form any loops to pull themselves up. Therefore, a climbing aid for French beans is absolutely unnecessary. If you want to green a wall or fence, you should plant runner beans or fire beans instead.

Support for climbing beans

Runner beans and firebeans are climbing beans and need a climbing aid. There are very different options that cost little to no money:

  • For each bean, stick a stick in the soil vertically next to the plant.
  • Build a tent out of climbing beans by ramming a stick into the ground in a circle at a distance of 30 cm and tying them together in the middle. One climbing bean is planted per stick.
  • If you have a chain link fence (€ 119.00 at Amazon *), you can let your climbing beans climb it.
  • If you want to green a wall, you can do this with the help of threads that are fastened and tensioned at the top and bottom with a screw or similar.
  • Climbing beans also climb horizontally! If you plant your climbing beans on the raised bed or choose a very tall variety, you can create a green roof with the runner beans or firebeans by pulling vertical strings on which the climbing beans can hang along.
  • If you like it very creative, you can use strings to create shapes and pull the beans along them. However, the beans have to be helped here from time to time so that they don't get lost.

Tips

Both poles and firebeans can do without a trellis if they have enough hanging space. When growing on the balcony, for example, an enchanting curtain of flowers can be created from hanging beans.
