Coffee grounds as an effective home remedy against fungus gnats

Which coffee grounds are suitable?

Regardless of whether you brew fresh beans in the coffee machine in the morning or use pre-ground coffee, almost any coffee grounds are suitable for combating the fungus gnat. In addition to the coffee filter, you can even use the rest of the coffee capsules. However, the extraction is a little more laborious here.

application

  1. It is up to you whether you collect the coffee grounds first or immediately pour them onto the potting soil.
  2. The amount required depends on both your coffee consumption and the intensity of the infestation.
  3. Pour your coffee filter out onto a plate or place the coffee grounds in a large bowl.
  4. You have to cut open the coffee pods and empty them as well.
  5. Spread the coffee grounds on the chosen surface.
  6. Spread the coffee grounds over a large area so that the bottom layer does not start to mold.
  7. Now let the powder dry.
  8. Once you have gathered enough coffee grounds, pour them over the substrate of the affected plant.
  9. Make sure the earth is completely covered.

Pay attention to

Coffee grounds change the pH of the substrate slightly. For sensitive plants with high demands on the soil, you should therefore only apply a thin layer. In addition, it is necessary to also cover the substrate of neighboring plants so that the sciarid gnats do not jump over to them. For example, sand is recommended for this.

Mode of action

Sciarid gnats lay their eggs in the potting soil. The hatching fry later feed on the plant. With the coffee grounds you prevent the pests from accessing the potting soil and thus interrupt the propagation cycle.
