The impressive flower of the iris

The characteristic shape of the iris flower

The name of the iris comes from the tapering leaves and the characteristic shaped flowers. Botanically, each iris flower consists of three "flowers" that can be individually pollinated by insects and each consist of the following components:

  • Hanging leaves with eye-catching beards or combs
  • Standards that are often upright
  • Scar branches

If you do not cut off the flowers directly after the flowering period, the seeds will develop in the capsule fruits, which, as loculicidal capsules, tear open at the dorsal seams of the carpel as they ripen.

Tips & Tricks

The timing of flowering depends on the size of many iris species: smaller bearded irises can bloom as early as April, while an iris with a height of over 100 centimeters usually does not begin to bloom until June.
